About our new web server and its costs
Longtime users of PublicRadioFan.com will know that the site used to suffer from outages: two whole days in April 2008, and shorter intervals on many prior occasions. All of these incidents had the same cause: heavy usage of the site that overloaded the server and caused a temporary shutdown. Obviously such shutdowns were frustrating to all concerned, especially to users of the site. PublicRadioFan.com had reached a level of popularity that the only way to eliminate such problems was to put the site on a dedicated server (a machine whose only task is to run PublicRadioFan.com). After the April outage we upgraded to such a server, and we've had perfect reliability ever since.
But here's the catch: the new dedicated server for PublicRadioFan.com costs four times as much as the previous server. The annual cost considerably exceeds what we've been receiving in donations annually. Initially the difference has been made up out of the site owner's own pocket, but we can't continue operating on that basis indefinitely.
